Thanks for the tip.  I got it to work!  Here's what I discovered: In Eclipse, I 
was adding all the JAR files on the build path, which wasn't sufficient.  I 
copied all the files from book/code/lib/hibernate/, ...stripersist/, 
and ...hsqldb/ into my web/WEB-INF/lib folder, and my woes were resolved.
