Hello Struts developers,

(Please let me know if this is relevant to the dev list.) I am noticing that
ActionServlet requires a fair amount of time to digest the struts config
file. If you have several web apps on the same box, this can cause long
restart times for an application server. (30+ seconds) Since we want to make
maintenance restarts as painless as possible, I'm looking into ways to speed
the conversion of the struts-config XML into live configuration data.

One idea I've thought of is to serialize the results of a digestion. Then,
upon initialization, use the serialized or the XML version, whichever is
newer. Any thoughts on the feasibility/ease of this path?

Also, my solution would only speed unchanged config loads--it would not help
load times if the struts-config file had been altered. Are there any other
known tricks for speeding this process up?

Thanks,

Nicholas Lesiecki
