Thanks Martin. I did try that earlier but forgot to import the bean
descriptor file on the jsp page (the compiler never complained about the
missing tld file for the bean tag).
Is it possible to decouple the hardcoding the formname (LogonForm) in the
jsp page and refer it some how?

I think what you are looking for is <bean:write>. So you might do this:

<bean:write name="LogonForm" property="message"/>
