Ah, but if you were a Committer you'd have to apply them yourself ;=) What really happens is the Committers get tired of applying your patches, and so we make you a Committer to save us the trouble. :0)
Beside contributions, either in the form of code or documentation, the other thing we look for is a cooperative mindset. Any Committer can veto a product change by any other Committer, and so we need to be careful that anyone who joins us will use that veto judiciously. This is the hard part, since it often means reading between the lines of the candidate's emails. The third consideration is longevity. Jakarta is not as automated as some other places, like SourceForge, and so real people have to spend valuable volunteer time whenever we add someone to the project. -T.
