I would point out a couple things about this issue, however. If you inspect the code in "Double.parseDouble()" and "Long.parseLong()", it becomes clear that a complete implementation of this is not trivial. Also note that the "commons-lang" project apparently addresses some of this, but I don't how well it avoids exceptions for normal processing.
