I definitely appreciate the way you presented your case. I ran some benchmarks of my own and while your version is certainly quicker, I don't think that the existing version is so slow that it causes any problems in a real-world application. I would prefer to keep the existing version, because it is simpler and therefore easier to understand and maintain.
