I would like to create a simple top menu horizontal list
that loads the appropriate simple verticle
list. The desired behaviour should be similar to the
CSS tabs with submenus.

I am not sure that this effect is at all possible with
the current available menus. I have tried and tried with no
luck.

I have been able to override the existing css and change
the look and feel of the available menus but unfamiliarity
with both java script and velocity made it painfully
difficult to have complete control of the
style using plain css. I am a j2ee/web developer.

I am delighted to see the new CSS-based menus and
I am wondering if my hope for full style control of is now
possible by simply using only css.

The tricky part seems to be keeping the chosen top item
active continuously while the selected submenu items are also
kept active. Any comments or suggestions from anyone would be greatly
appreciated.
