Tokens?

Hello All,
 
I'm going over the Action javadocs and came across several methods that use
the keyword of "token".  The docs aren't very intuitive on what exactly
defines a token.  
 
What do the token methods do?  
 
generateToken()
resetToken()
saveToken()
isTokenValid()
