I have used iText successfully in my previous assignment. It works extremely well. If one wants 2 go bleeding edge, they can have a look at FOP from apache or WH2FO by Fabio Gianetti (works for simple word --> pdf conversion. If your word doc has tables inside of tables, this tool blows up.)
