Dean, In addition to what has already been said regarding the MIME type, I'd like to mention a very good tool we're using for one of our projects: Java Excel API, A Java API to read, write and modify Excel spreadsheets. It generates files in xls format (not just CSV). Very good product. And LGPL'ed.
