Thanks Kevin, this gets me on the right track.
I'm not sure what NAMING_PROVIDER to use
but it points out what I need to study.

As for the NoClassDef error, I think I've fixed that, by putting the 
necessary
jar files into the Tomcat's /lib dir.

When I figure it out I'll give you the details.  But I have to leave 
town for  a week first.
