We use Tomcat 4.0.3 / Struts 1.0.2 and Log4J. Before we went down that road, we compared the 2 logging mechanisms, and in terms of usability, log4j seems to come out at the top. Not sure about performance though.
Anyway, my recommendation is log4j.
