You get right to the point don't you Mark :-) ? I think online forums are much easier to use than mailing lists because they're easier to search for previous questions and you can easily ignore uninteresting topics. However, one practice I like is the use of [OT] to designate clearly off topic threads like this one. I filter those mails to a different folder for convenience; I wish more people used that convention.
Ironically this thread is only increasing the amount of traffic.
