I'd say you have a bad install of Java on your OS, not a Struts problem. You should never see the VM crash under any circumstances where the VM and the OS are installed correctly.
What OS are you running on? Are you running the most current updates of everything, including the OS? What threads type and versions are you using? You probably have an incompatibility somewhere between those three.
