I swear, I'm not stupid, really. I had left out the name attribute in the action configuration so it didn't know what kind of form to create. Duh.
Fear not, I'm declaring a moratorium on asking questions for awhile, mostly to save what remaining dignity I have left :) (Well, I am kind of wondering if when people to an update/edit if they have the id of the object as a hidden field in the form, and if people think it's a potential security risk if it's there.)
