We have found that by using the "jikes" compiler instead of javac for doing ejbc, we are much more economical with memory. Specifically we use jikes 1.15, although a few of us use 1.17 (avoid 1.16!!). Prior to switching over to use jikes, we were constantly getting the same memory errors you are seeing.
