It's one of the pains in the butts of web application development -- the advantage of HTTP is that it's super simple and so is very easy to get started and understand the fundamentals. But it's also very primitive, and you can't send "true" objects with behaviors over the wire, then invoke those behaviors on the other side.
SOAP addresses this issue somewhat.
