The only problem with IRC is somebody (or a group) would have take responsibility as channel master(s) and keep the channel open continuously by auto-polling. Otherwise, it's much easier checking who's on Yahoo! IM and group chat rather than having to reset-up an IRC channel every time it gets closed from inactivity.
