What if you've got an existing app written in PHP but need to extend it to
do some fancy stuff?  Or scale it (via the use of something like EJBs)
instead of using SQL database access directly?

This isn't about what's better for new apps.  This is about making it
possible for PHP (and other scripting language developers) to utilize the
facilities of a Java based app server, and thereby become part of the Java
community as well.
