It is impossible to show how many users. What is possible is to show how many sessions are open and what is the idle time for the session at a given moment. If you use tomcat there is a manager (not admin) app that comes with it. It is pretty cool to play around with it. You can do other things with it besides displaying current sessions. If you do not use tomcat then use manager app to see how they implemented it. It is pretty straight forward, you can kind of guess what to do by just browsing the JavaDoc for servlet.
