Robert No need to roll your own. Please also have a look at eForum which is open source (www.jcorporate.com). Its license is an apache style license (not GPL :)). Its been around as long as Jive and has about 37,000 downloads. Its Struts and Express based. The most recent version has search capabilities using Lucene.
