I can't find the details right now, but I have a vague recollection that the IBM JDK includes an RMI-IIOP implementation that is a requirement for Websphere. So you won't be able to switch to a non-IBM JDK.
If you're running just about anything except Windows, you may be able to use an updated IBM JDK (http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/). IBM has not separately released its 1.4 version for Windows, though it is available bundled with products like MQ Series (sorry, Websphere MQ - marketing dept strikes again). I don't have any information on whether it's *advisable* to change the JDK on Websphere, since it doesn't seem to be supported. Personally, I wouldn't risk it in a production environment.
