For the record we got the problem sorted by rolling back the weblogic jdk from 1.4.1 
to 1.3.1_09. (Naturally we also had to re-compile the app)

Without knowing the particulars of your application, it's hard to say 
what's going on, but a similar thread earlier in the week resolved to a 
problem with database connections not being released, leading to a 
starvation condition in the database connection pooling code.

Have you tried running WLS in JPDA mode and connecting a debugger to it 
to check the state of the various threads?
