Mostly what you've already outlined, (ie updating the manual) but also
providing documentation on our wiki.  Removing *contrib-dir* is going to
break configs so there needs to be lots of blinking and flashing lights
pointing to documentation on how to do things the new way.  

Also, I can advertise your branch, or you can submit a pull request and
I can make it a branch off of the main repo, in either case a wiki page
describing this change would be great!
