Revolution Home Theater Film Review
Cellular Reviewed by Abbie Bernstein
Rating: Three-and-a-Half Stars

Despite some whopping plot coincidences and improbabilities, Cellular turns out to
be a winning thriller. Writer Chris Morgan, working from a story by Larry Cohen, and
director David R. Ellis handle serve up dire matters with a breakneck pace, yet find
time for lots of grace notes, humor and affection for the characters.

There actually turns out to be a perfectly plausible reason why five men break into
the Martin home and kidnap wife/mother/science teacher Jessica (Kim Basinger). Jessica
really has never seen these guys before in her life and truthfully swears she has no
idea what they want with her. Jessicas kidnapers dont believe her and swear to
snatch her 11-year-old son from school if she wont aid them. The men lock Jessica in
the attic of a strange house, smashing the telephone in the room. However, left alone,
Jessica is able to patch the wrecked phone together enough to get the device to
blindly dial outward...

8 Mile

Although it is set very specifically in 1995, 8 Mile evokes memories of 1977s
Saturday Night Fever, which likewise featured a young man from a working-class
background trying to make something of himself via his chosen art form. There have
actually been plenty of movies with this premise before and since its just that
Saturday Night Fever is one of the few that succeeded without making its themes
and/or its lead look silly.

While Brooklyn discos in the 70s and Detroit rap clubs in the 90s would seem to be
separated by far more than mere geography, 8 Mile turns out to be a worthy successor
in the genre.

Bless The Child

The last two years have seen a surprising amount of entries in an odd subgenre: big
studio Catholic horror movies. First Patricia Arquette coped with both priestly and
demonic possession in "Stigmata." Then Arnold Schwarzenegger strove to prevent Satan
from fathering a child in "End of Days." More recently, Winona Ryder tried to stop
Lucifer from taking over an unbeliever in "Lost Souls." While there have been some
excellent Catholic horror movies in the past ("The Exorcist" comes to mind), all of
the newer ones have ranked somewhere on the gonzo meter. However, the silliest so far
is arguably "Bless the Child," with Kim Basinger as the foster mother of a young
potential saint beset by evil forces.
