DirecTV HD 10-250 High-Def TiVo Reviewed

In a recent poll, 26% of Audio Video Revolution readers said that the next AV
component they are most likely to buy is an HDTV Digital Video Recorder (DVR).
Dish Network has their own unit, but for 10 million plus DirecTV subscribers,
the wait for the ability to record HDTV was painfully long.

Revolution Home Theater Film Review
The Polar Express Reviewed by Bill Warren
Rating: Three-and-a-Half Stars

Theres no escaping The Polar Express Its bearing down on all of us,
thundering, hissing and honking, a juggernaut of determinedly glorious
entertainment. Tom Hanks, who kind of stars, and Robert Zemeckis, who directed
and co-wrote the script, are turning up on what seems to be every talk show
other than the one hosted by Alf. They talk excitedly about the process the
film employs, pointing out how the method allows the director almost infinite
possibilities in blocking the action and choosing performances. We see shot
after shot of Tom Hanks in a black skin-tight suit that looks like he just got
back from SCUBA diving, his face covered in a network of tiny dots. No longer
mere motion capture, the computer-driven method used in other movies,
including Lord of the Rings (Gollum) and Final Fantasy, it has been
rechristened performance capture, since now the actors facial expressions
had been caught.

Apollo 13

'Apollo 13' remains Ron Howard's best movie as a director, compelling,
well-acted, deeply involving and tightly focussed on its story, the
near-disaster of the Apollo 13 moon voyage. Even on home video, this movie --
which like most big-scale films, still works better in theaters no matter how
good your system -- retains its power and suspense. And the latter is Howard's
finest accomplishment: the whole world knows that through a combination of
luck, skill, training, ingenuity and focussed attention, the three Apollo 13
astronauts returned safely to Earth. But the movie still manages to be
nail-bitingly suspenseful from almost the beginning until Tom Hanks' summing-up
voiceover at the end.

It's so engrossing as to be nearly hypnotic, with strong but self-effacing
performances...

Cast Away

The "Cast Away" DVD is essential viewing for any audiophile who is serious
about cinema sound. The film has an excellent audio track, particularly the DTS
version. However, what makes this DVD so crucial is that the audio commentary
track includes the observations of a production team member seldom heard from
in DVD supplements the sound designer. In fact, its probably a good idea to
watch "Cast Away" once for the full film experience, then listen to sound
designer Randy Thom point out not just big effects like the Chapter 7 plane
crash, but tiny details like how a Chapter 4 scene begins with the slap of
datebooks striking a surface or the exact pitch of a copy machine. After that,
go back and re-hear to the movie with all of Thoms secrets in mind for an
enlightening new audio experience. Director Robert Zemeckis and three other key
production members are equally articulate about their own work.
