Virtually the entire cast has been reassembled, a few guest stars are tossed in, and its shot on attractive European locations (rather than Las Vegas), including Amsterdam, Paris and several parts of Italy. Its more of a goof than the first film, both a virtue and a defect. In the first movie, we were introduced to the team of experienced thieves assembled by master thief Danny Ocean (George Clooney), and followed them as they stole almost two hundred million bucks from Vegas casino owner Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia). Out of Sight While not a hit, this movie pleased virtually everyone who saw it in theaters, and it's only going to win more followers on video -- particularly in this terrific DVD. There are plenty of extras, which is easy enough to do, if you have the footage, but here they're particularly well organized, with interesting deleted scenes, intelligent commentary by director Steven Soderbergh and writer Scott Frank, and well-chosen clips from the "electronic press kit" created to publicize the film, including some words from Elmore Leonard, author of the original novel. Elsewhere, Leonard has said that he keeps notepads on which he outlines the characters in great detail, from birth to the point in their lives he wants to deal with. In the adequate making-of featurette included on this DVD, Joel & Ethan Coen describe 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' as a combination of the Three Stooges, a Ma & Pa Kettle movie, and Homer's 'Odyssey.' They might as well have included the 1939 'Wizard of Oz,' 'Moby Dick' and the blues legend that also gave rise to Walter Hill's 'Crossroads' (1986). The title comes from Preston Sturges' great 'Sullivan's Travels' (itself just released on DVD). This wonderfully daft movie scrambles in these elements (Homer is actually credited) and many others, and still remains entirely itself. The Coens are uneven filmmakers, but at their best, with, say, 'Blood Simple,' 'Fargo' and 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?', they make vividly distinctive, engrossing and unique movies. They're not even like the Coens' own other films. Click below to read the full review... http://www.avrev.com/dvd/revs/obrother.shtml Check out our DVD review archive.
