Flight of the Phoenix
Reviewed by Bill Warren
Rating: Four Stars

A lot of remakes get released these days, usually of films that were big hits
the first time aroundwhy remake a flop? But the 1965 The Flight of the
Phoenix wasnt a major hit, even though it starred James Stewart. It was
somewhat too long (much longer than this remake), but was founded on a solid
premise that is trickier to work out than at first appears. That movie was
written by Lukas Heller from the novel by Elleston Trevor; this is written by
Scott Frank and Edward Burns (the actor-director). The director is John Moore,
really known only for Behind Enemy Lines, with Owen Wilson and Gene Hackman.

Everyone has done their work just fine Flight of the Phoenix is a strong,
well-made tale of peril and survival. Its hard to describe it as
action-adventure, since theres really very little action, which is the
tricky part. A big cargo plane, the once widely-used C-119, goes down in a vast
desert. Most of the passengers survive, but the plane is smashed. All nearby
outposts are beyond walking distance, their radio is out, and they were far off
course when they crashed. What can they do?

PurePower: It's like plugging into Niagara Falls

The only way to ensure your A/V system meets spec and is protected at all times
is to de-couple it from the local utility power with a PurePower AC
Regenerator. Conventional power conditioners merely filter the noise, protect
against surges, and in some cases regulate voltage.

PurePower connects you to a new, stable power source, off the power grid, as
though you were hooked up to the cleanest power station in North America. Even
if the inbound voltage is zero, PurePower keeps your system operating perfectly
with its built-in back-up battery system. Perfect voltage sinewave, total
freedom from line noise, distortion, surges, and sags.

Unheard of? Not any more. Come see for yourself the new InFocus 61md10.

Any Given Sunday
All too often, this movie is so loud, noisy and chaotic that it's like having
your head in a washing machine full of marbles. It's dizzying, deafening,
frenetic, and you don't know why you're there. The rest of the time, "Any Given
Sunday" sometimes gets by on sheer nerve, bravura acting and velocity. It's far
from Oliver Stone's best movie, but much better than "U-Turn" or "Nixon," and
he's giving it his flashy, trashy all.

He has a huge and busy cast, the football scenes are staged with flair and
energy, the score is imaginative, and lord knows it's earnest. But for those
not deeply into football, at almost 160 minutes it's also exhausting. Even for
those who are fans of the game, you're likely to watch this DVD all the way
through once...

Something to Talk About
Because of an incomplete-seeming script (by Callie Khouri), "Something to Talk
About" never quite jells, despite a fine cast, some good dialog and excellent
production values. Although the ending is emotionally satisfying on a basic
level, it still leaves you wanting more than the film provides.

Julia Roberts plays leading character Grace Bichon; she's married to Eddie
(Dennis Quaid), has a spunky, horse-loving daughter Caroline (Haley Aull), and
works for her wealthy, horse-breeding father Wyly (Robert Duvall). Grace lives
in the same Southern city where she grew up, and lives a basically unexamined
life; she's more under the thumb of her cheerfully domineering father than she
likes to admit, is active in a local women's group, and tends to be a little
scatterbrained -- in the opening scene, she forgetfully leaves Caroline behind
twice.

Ever wonder what happens to your A/V system when the lights dim?

Mere conditioners and filters can't fix that. When the incoming power is
degraded by low voltage and a dirty sinewave, it's like putting 74 octane gas
into a high performance engine. Suddenly, the performance you expected and paid
for is gone. To solve that problem, you need perfect power. Only ExactPower's
EP15A Precision Voltage Regulation and Waveform Correction system delivers 120
perfect volts on a pristine 60Hz sinewave, with up to 1500 watts on demand to 8
outlets on the rear panel for dramatically improved audio and video
performance. Winner of the Best New Product Debut of 2003!
