How to Hire & Manage an Interior Designer

If you are in the process of building a theater or maybe someday looking at
adding to or remodeling your home to include a fantastic, purpose-built home
theater, the likelihood is you are going to be working with an interior
designer. Much like knowing lawyers and paying taxes, they are a necessary
evil. The choice you make in picking an interior designer is essential in the
success and budgeting of your project.

In most states, there are literally no significant barriers to become an
interior designer. In California, where I recently finished remodeling a 1950s
post and beam home, the guy who maintains my SUV or the guy who washes my
hair at my Beverly Hills salon must have state certification, thus insuring at
least a cursory level of expertise. An architect has to have years upon years
of technical and artistic training before he or she can start building homes,
and with each project, a citys design review oversees your project relative to
their codes and standards...

White Noise
Reviewed by Abbie Bernstein
Rating: Three-and-a-Half Stars

If youve ever been even mildly unnerved by anything about your high-end
recording equipment besides its price, White Noise is here to kick your fears
into overdrive. Where The Ring played upon urban myth fears of a cursed
videotape, White Noise spreads the creepiness to all videotape and
audiotape, cell phones and computer recording equipment, too.

Michael Keaton stars as Jonathan Rivers, a successful architect married to
equally successful author Anna (Chandra West). The couple are blissfully happy,
but one night, Anna disappears. Grief-stricken and determined not to give up
hope, Jonathan notices hes being tailed by a stranger, Raymond Price (Ian
McNeice). When confronted, Raymond tells the disbelieving Jonathan that Anna is
dead and has asked Raymond to pass along the message that shes safe and
happy. However, when Jonathans cell phone receives a call from Annas phone
safely tucked away in a drawer and then the police show up at the door
announcing theyve found the body, Jonathan is a little more inclined to listen
to Raymond. Raymond, it turns out, is fascinated by Electronic Voice
Phenomenon, EVP for short, in which recording white noise or an empty video
signal sometimes captures what sound a lot like words and even images from the
dead.

Pacific Heights
Pacific Heights is an attempt at an urban thriller based on an unusual threat
-- the loss of a house -- and it almost works, due to Melanie Griffith and the
powerful, eerie performance of Michael Keaton. Matthew Modine tries hard, but
the role called for someone intensely likable, and Modine simply isn't. He's a
decent enough actor, but the camera doesn't "love" him, and his character is
bad-tempered and impulsive, so we lose sympathy for him, and patience with the
film, all too quickly.

Pacific Heights was called the ultimate yuppie nightmare, because it centers on
a couple who are in their early thirties, live in a city -- San Francisco --
and have ambitions, and because the film centers on property ownership, which
is classically a yuppie issue.

Clean and Sober
Clean and Sober is a very good, very dark look at an addict/alcoholic
struggling with sobriety. Although the movie was made 17 years ago, it doesn't
seem dated; the dynamics of substance abuse seem to be much the same today.

Director Glenn Gordon Caron makes shrewd use of Michael Keaton's trademark
smart-ass persona, casting him here as hot-shot real estate salesman Daryl
Poynter, who checks into a rehab program to hide from some legal problems.
Daryl initially supposes that he's only pretending to be a cokehead and a
drinker, but as his life continues to spin out of control, it gradually dawns
on him that he really does need help. The material could easily be preachy,
predictable or just plain TV-movie dull, but Tod Carroll's knowing script and
Caron's careful direction make Clean and Sober compelling and real.
