Sprawling San Diego Theater

29 TVs, 32 pairs of speakers, five miles of AV cable, 15 satellite receivers,
four HD receivers. This may sound like the opening order for a small
electronics store, but its actually just the tip of the iceberg for a complete
home theater/distributed audio system put together by Jerry Axelrod of Systems
Design Group in Redondo Beach and his team of installers. Nestled in the
rolling hills of North County San Diego, this sprawling estate is packed full
of speakers, TVs, plasmas and other assorted AV goodies. However, while walking
through the Old World-inspired architecture of this beautiful home, with its
stone floors and warm wood ceiling columns, one hardly notices how much
technology the surroundings contain.

Hide and Seek
Reviewed by Bill Warren
Rating: One Star

Robert De Niro must love to work because he makes so damned many movies. But
his selection of scripts doesnt show the kind of intelligence he exhibits as
an actor. Surely he must have seen the turkey qualities of Hide and Seek
while it was in script form? But here he is, anyway, and not just him, but
Dakota Fanning as well. Theres very little about this dreary, predictable
horror mystery that can be recommended, even to indulgent audiences. De Niro is
reasonably good, but his role is not exactly challenging. Maybe hes still
trying to finance his Tribeca setup

Hide and Seek was directed by John Polson; his only significant previous
credit was as director of Swimfan, and that was even worse than Hide and
Seek. He occasionally sets up tense, suspenseful scenes, but also demonstrates
all too often that his ideas about shock scenes are crude, MTV-inspired,
over-edited and indecipherable junk.

Meet the Parents
Together with the earlier 'Analyze This,' 'Meet the Parents' went a long way in
establishing Robert De Niro, of all people, as a comic actor. Actually, if you
watch both films closely, he's not doing comedy performances at all, but
playing his roles completely straight. It's the circumstances that are comic --
not that De Niro doesn't get his share of laughs.

In this case, the circumstances derive from a little-known 1992 movie of the
same title directed, co-written by and starring Greg Glienna. Yes, 'Meet the
Parents' is a remake, scripted by Jim Herzfeld and John Hamburg and directed by
Jay Roach, who helmed both "Austin Powers" movies. The script is very good,
particularly in terms of structure -- it builds very well to a climax that
consists of two guys in a room talking, but which is emotionally satisfying on
a surprisingly warm level.

The Godfather Part II
All during the making of "The Godfather," director/co-writer Francis Ford
Coppola was worried that he might be yanked off the film at any moment, or that
the film would be taken away from him once it was finished, and edited by
unfriendly hands. But when "The Godfather" became a historically-significant
smash hit, Coppola was immediately wooed by Paramount to make a sequel.

He had his revenge. Not only did he make the film he (and co-writer and
original "Godfather" author Mario Puzo) wanted to make, but he was paid better,
the movie was much more expensive and lavish -- and some feel that it's even
better than the original. Without picking and choosing between them, it is safe
to say that taken as one movie, "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part II" is
one of the greatest movies ever made by anyone, anywhere.
