Recently, Classe joined forces in, as some are calling it, a slow takeover of the company with the investment firm that owns and operates B&W loudspeakers and Rotel. Their first move was to hire one of Mark Levinsons big gun executives, Dave Nauber, to run the show. Like Maserati, the newly-reconfigured Classe set out to significantly redesign every element of their product line, from the look of their products to functionality to dealer networks and beyond. Their goal, and I am one who believes they will be successful in this, is to elevate Classe from a Top 10 AV company to one of the most elite brands in the world. One of the new Classes first offerings is a reference-level monoblock amplifier system for high-end audio and home theater use. The CA-M400s are 400-watt-per-channel amps that can be placed in the traditional location beside your speakers or rack-mounted as a part of an ultimate theater system in a 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 or beyond configuration. Normally, the feature set of an amplifier is pretty simple they power any number of your speakers at a reported watt-per-channel level. In the case of the CA-M400s, their amps do a little more. A lot of the time, the new romantic comedy Hitch coasts on this sort of good feeling, gently getting us to grin, but if it doesnt often soar to comedic heights, it never dips below a certain comfort level, either. It is, in a word, pleasant. Will Smith plays the title character, Alex Hitch Hitchens, a Manhattan dating consultant known as the love doctor, so secretive that hes widely assumed to be an urban myth. His current big project is coaching shy accountant Albert (Kevin James) in wooing seemingly unattainable heiress Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta). Meanwhile, Hitch is smitten with Sara Melas (Eva Mendes), a beautiful woman he sees in a bar. Smooth, witty and persistent, Hitch manages to get the romantically cynical Sara to agree to go out with him. The date is something of a fiasco, but Sara is taken enough with Hitch to go for a second round, albeit with an ulterior motive. Hitch, like the audience, is aware that Sara is a gossip columnist for a major newspaper. What he doesnt realize rather naively, given the range of knowledge his specialized job calls for is that Sara is professionally interested in writing about Allegra and therefore starting to look into the new man in Allegras life. It doesn t take Allegra long to learn theres a connection between Albert and Hitch but what is it? Ali Fame is usually a relative thing people can be stars in their field among their peers and/or to those interested in their area of expertise, while being unknown commodities to the rest of the world. Director Michael Mann may be a case in point. While the Oscar-nominated (for 1999s "The Insider") filmmaker is well known to everyone who cares about movies, hes not necessarily a household name to those who dont follow cinema. Sometimes, though, there are individuals who transcend this rule. A person can be completely indifferent to boxing and still recognize the name and face of world champion Muhammad Ali. Manns film about "the Champ," entitled simply "Ali," is at times a fascinating but confusingly structured biographical drama. Any sport that requires a great deal of very expensive equipment to play, such as skiing, SCUBA diving or golf, is not going to be very convincing as such a metaphor, because the public, for the most part, rarely plays such sports. Rich people do. (Yes, I know there are exceptions.) A stand-in for life needs to be something anyone can relate to, and something to which they formed an attachment since childhood. Basketball requires (a) a basket and (b) a ball; baseball requires (a) a bat and (b) a ball; football requires (a) a ball. (Soccer is much the same.) Almost any kid can meet these minimal requirements, and many do, so these sports seep into people's souls.
