Revolution Home Theater Film Reviews

Robots
Reviewed by Bill Warren
Rating: Four Stars

Robots is yet another dazzling CGI-animated feature, and its not even from
Pixar. The production company was Blue Sky and the distributor 20th
Century-Fox, the same team that produced the winning Ice Age a couple of
years back. So many CGI movies have been so good that its starting to get a
little creepy. But honest, it only seems like animated movies are better these
days when done in CG imagery. The real reasons theyre so good are that they
get all the dough and attract all the younger animation talent. But have fun
while it lasts.

And Robots is tremendous fun, whether you see it in your local neighborhood
theater or venture into expensive-parking-land to see it in IMAX. It will look
terrific either wayits the best eye candy in years, and youll need to see it
several times to spot all the inventive gags.

The Upside of Anger
Reviewed by Bill Warren
Rating: Four and a half Stars

There are some movies that so clearly have their act together in the just the
first few minutes that you can relax; you know youre in good hands, and can
simply go with the flow of the film. The Upside of Anger is such a movie,
good enough that I hope its remembered toward the end of the year: it deserves
a couple of Oscar nominations.

Certainly Joan Allen deserves one (again), and Kevin Costner, too, for
Supporting Actor. Both give realistic, funny and thorough performances,
convincing, committed but relaxedeven if Allens character is anything but
relaxed. She spends the entire moviewhich covers three yearsin a
long-lasting, highly variable snit. She has damned good reason to be so
furious, although as Emily (Keri Russell), one of her four teen-to-twenty
daughters says in her brief narration, her mother is the nicest, sweetest
person that anyone who knew her ever knew, but now shes angry. If she werent
my mother, Id slap her. Just those few words encapsulate the
carefully-controlled tone of the movie: realistic but funny. Its not a comedy,
but then its not exactly NOT a comedy.

Dragonfly
The question of whether there is a life after death, let alone a heaven and a
hell, has been one of the constant interests of mankind. The preoccupation with
the afterlife and what shape it will take has spurred countless works of
fiction and philosophy and film. Dragonfly takes on that discussion and
invests a lot of passion into presenting the question, of enticing the viewer
to think deeply about the subject, and presenting mysterious suspense and
razor-edged anticipation. Part ghost story and part supernatural thriller,
Dragonfly addresses that ages-old question and gives an answer of sorts in an
explosion of fear and love and loss.

In Chapter 1, Dr. Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner) has a panicked conversation with
his wife Emily...

Dances With Wolves
1990's Oscar winner for Best Picture 'Dances With Wolves' is almost everything
one can ask from an epic film: it's emotionally stirring without being
sentimental, powefully acted and stunningly beautiful to look at--credit here
to cinematographer Dean Semler, who creates the West of our dreams for the
camera. Since its release, there has been something of a backlash against the
popularity of 'Dances' and its director/star/producer (with Jim Wilson) Kevin
Costner. Don't let the anti-hype or the post-'Prince of Thieves'
Costner-bashing get to you. This is one instance where the initial acclaim is
deserved.

Director Costner and screenwriter Michael Blake, who adapted his own novel,
skillfully immerse us in the American wilderness circa the Civil War.
