Revolution Home Theater Feature Film Reviews

The Interpreter
Reviewed By Bill Warren
Rating: Three and a half stars

Sydney Pollacks The Interpreter is a solid, well-crafted drama/thriller in
which the major sub-theme relates to grief and how to deal with it. In the
trailers and advertising, the basic ideaa U.N. interpreter accidentally
overhears an assassination plotseems to suggest that this is a Hitchcock-like
exercise in suspense. Surprisingly, its really a somber, intelligent drama;
suspense plays a part, but the movies goals go far beyond the edge-of-the-seat
thrill-o-rama the trailers promise.

Pollack has had an uneven career, but his lows are not embarrassing and his
highs are top-notch Hollywood filmmaking. The Interpreter is weakened
somewhat by overlength and a less-than-gripping middle section. Also, the
suicide of a major secondary character is so badly motivated that you can
easily assume it was murder, and begin waiting for the killer to be revealed.
The storytelling is a bit ragged at times; instead of a straight-line
narrative, the movie tends to be discursive. And despite the casting of two
such iconic figures as Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn, at heart it is not about
the relationship of their characters.

A Lot Like Love
Reviewed By Bill Warren
Rating: Zero stars

After an impulsive visit to the mile high club, strangers Oliver (Ashton
Kutcher) and Emily (Amanda Peet) quickly go their separate ways, yet somehow
remain in each other's lives for the next seven ears. Jobs comes and go, as do
significant others, but the spark found between Oliver and Emily returns every
now and again. The lovers are baffled on what to do about it, and almost miss
their hance at happily ever after for good.

It's never the predictability of romantic comedies that bothers me, it's when
the material is as flat as a pancake that really gets under my skin. "A Lot
Like Love" couldn't even be considered flat. "Love" is a cinematic debacle so
fluffy and forgettable, I was shocked at how infuriated I had become by the
time the film ended. "Love" isn't insulting, just blindingly tedious, achingly
unfunny, and negligently directed.

Anthony Gallo Acoustics
The Reference3 Speaks For Itself

"... Not since the Vandersteen 2 has a loudspeaker come on to the audio scene
with such assuredness of success. Not since the Vandy has a speaker so outpaced
the competition in terms of quality and value at its price point as has this
Gallo loudspeaker." Martin DeWolf - Bound For Sound

"... This speaker combines so much unconventional thinking, novel applications
and build quality in such a balanced, physically compact but sonically
gargantuan and full-range design, and for such an exceedingly fair price that
some drastic measure of formal recognition was required to truly separate it
out from the crowds that make up the $3,000 - $10,000 floorstanding speaker
field." Srajan Ebaen - sixmoons.com

NAD PowerDrive - So smart, it knows what your speakers are thinking

They say that knowledge is power. So when it comes to reacting to the
constantly fluctuating power needs of today's loudspeakers, an A/V receiver has
to be very smart indeed. Most A/V receivers fail the test and you hear
distortion. NAD's dual-rail power supply knows when your speakers need extra
help to deliver clean, undistorted sound. The result is honor roll performance
for your movies and music.

The Others
Ghost stories have been done, literally, to death. Yet there is something about
the hint of the supernatural, the chance of possibly viewing something that has
so far gone unseen and didnt quite make it to the grave, that draws audiences
into such a tale. Even the youngest viewers are familiar with stories of
ghostly haunts and Things That Go Bump In The Night.

Director and Writer Alejandro Amenbar has created a quiet and chilling
masterpiece in "The Others." Where so many horror films of the day rely on
special effects and gore, Amenbar crafts his tale with subtlety and delicious
anticipation on part of the audience. The viewers, after all, have probably
seen ghost stories before and are familiar with the twists and turns most often
taken. Clues are provided throughout the movie, and woven with such dexterity
that watchers with avid imaginations will constantly be second-guessing
themselves and the plot.

Dead Calm
This Australian thriller was released in the United States with little fanfare
-- but to acclaim and a lot of jangled nerves. It helped establish Sam Neill
and Nicole Kidman as boxoffice names (though it didn't do the same for Billy
Zane), and brought director Philip Noyce to the U.S. Up here from Down Under,
Noyce has alternated good with less-good movies; his first American-financed
movie was the little-known BLIND FURY, with Rutger Hauer, but that was followed
by PATRIOT GAMES. But then that was followed by SLIVER, a mediocre flop -- but
he bounced back with CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER in 1994. Since then, his footing
has been somewhat slippery, although 1999's THE BONE COLLECTOR wasn't bad. He's
scheduled to direct the next in the Jack Ryan series.

Based on the novel of the same title by Charles Williams, DEAD CALM opens with
a peculiar, unpleasant sequence centering on the accidental death of the young
son of Aussie Naval officer John...
