This was the case with the daughter of one of New Wave Home Systems� (based in Jackson, Tennessee) newest clients. She had spent the night with a friend whose family had just installed a dedicated home theater room in their home by New Wave Home Systems. The next day the client�s daughter came home raving about how cool it was and how her family needed something like that. Later that week, New Wave Home Systems received a call from the client telling them about his daughter�s movie night at her friend�s house. He wanted to know what New Wave Home Systems had done at that client�s house and what could be done to the room that he is remodeling. New Wave's Scott Johnson set up a meeting in their showroom and walked him through all the different types of rooms that they have to offer. Being new to home theater, the client did not have an exact budget in mind for the room and didn�t know what theme or look he wanted in the room. Written by Douglas Adams, who turned it into a mini-industry, it started as a radio series (the original lead, Simon Jones, appears here briefly), then turned into a TV miniseries and branched out into a series of novels. It�s been on the verge of turning into a movie for decades. Adams was working on this script when he suddenly died at 49 a couple of years ago; the movie is dedicated to him. Like a lot of British humor of this particular flavor, for Americans, �Hitchhiker�s Guide� takes a bit of getting used to. Sometimes, as with Monty Python, it�s worth the effort; sometimes it is not. This is basically upper-crust, well-educated silliness that depends a great deal on dryly-observed unexpected contrasts. Although I loved such progenitors as the Goon Show and Peter Cook & Dudley Moore, it took me a bit to connect with Monty Python�partly due to me, partly because it really is very hit-and-miss, and always was. The Green Mile Frank Darabont wrote and directed THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, a period prison drama from a story by Stephen King. THE GREEN MILE, also written and directed by Darabont, is also a period prison drama from a story by Stephen King. But both the stories and the movies are very different works. Unlike SHAWSHANK, THE GREEN MILE covers only a few weeks or months and is about the reactions of a team of prison guards, mostly decent men, to discovering that they have a miracle-worker in their midst. The trouble is, of course, that they're the guards on the Death Row (the Green Mile) of a Louisiana state prison in 1935, and the miracle-worker is a condemned prisoner. If you don't buy into the basic premise of the story, you're not going to buy into the movie, either: you have to be ready to accept the idea of real magic working in such a mundane arena. The movie has some problems... It's clearly a riff on the fiercely-loved original STAR TREK series, and if a whiff of condescension had entered into the proceedings, Trekkies as well as those who merely liked the series would have stormed the projection booth and tore the print to shreds. But the makers of GALAXY QUEST were very wise: yes, it is amused by the Trek phenomenon, its actors and its fans, but it's a very affectionate amusement. Clearly those who made the movie like STAR TREK; it's just that their fondness for the series and what centers on it didn't prevent them from seeing the humor in all of it. The premise is that "Galaxy Quest" was a very popular TV series in the late 70s and early 80s. Even though it was canceled, its devoted fans still have conventions centering on the show...
