Building the Basic Home Theater - Part Two: Setting a Budget for Gear

Welcome. In part one of our series on how to build a badass home theater, we
talked about preparing your room, controlling ambient light, choosing furniture
and, finally, how to convince your wife (or husband) how to let you install
your dream home theater. In this feature, we are going to focus specifically on
one of the biggest concerns that any of us have before we take the plunge into
a major home theater: cost. The prices below for the systems we have assembled
consist primarily of retail prices available at the time of the publication of
this article. It is not meant as a definitive guide, but rather as a road map
to building the budget for your own gear. Specific prices, tax and shipping
will vary, based on when and where you purchase your gear.

Anyone who has clicked through the pages of Revolution Home Theater
(RevolutionHomeTheater.com) and has seen some of the world's most elaborate
custom home theater installations knows that the sky is the limit when it comes
to budget.Automated drapes, custom lighting scenes and motorized lifts are just
some of the ways you can really run up the tab on your theater, and for those
who have the coin to do this, I say go for it. If you are going the high-end
route, your dealer or custom installer will have plenty of options for not only
your gear, but also how to automate it, distribute your music and movies
throughout the house and ultimately control it, all with a few simple commands
on a touch-screen remote panel.

Revolution Home Theater Feature Film Reviews

War of the Worlds
Reviewed By Bill Warren
Rating: Four and a half stars

If Tom Cruise's personal hijinks haven't dampened the obvious enthusiasm for
this movie, Paramount/DreamWorks have a major winner on their hands. "War of
the Worlds" is not just the best movie of the year so far, it¹s the best alien
invasion movie since the original "The War of the Worlds" back in 1953. (Gene
Barry and Ann Robinson, the stars of that film, have brief cameos at the end of
this one.)

It's so far above "Independence Day" that there¹s very little comparison. That
movie was a funhouse ride, not to be taken seriously except at moments. This
movie means business, and its business is very grim indeed; this is even darker
than "Jaws." It's not as gruesomely realistic as the first quarter of "Saving
Private Ryan," but it's a lot more movie-realistic and serious in its goals
than almost any other big-audience movie Spielberg has made in many years.
There are many hand-held camera shots but thankfully Spielberg doesn't resort
to that rapid-fire editing that passes for action these days..

Revolution Home Theater Featured DVD Reviews
Read Two More H.G. Wells' Related DVD Reviews on RHT...

H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds
Now that H.G. Wells' famous 1898 novel The War of the Worlds has entered public
domain, and there¹s a heavily-publicized, very expensive new movie version from
Steven Spielberg, there are now several movie versions to choose from. In
addition to the Spielberg version, titled "War of the Worlds," there is, of
course, the 1953 version, "The War of the Worlds," is already out on DVD, but
due to be reissued in a extras-laden DVD in November. Then there's a minor
movie called "Invasion" while in production, but which hastily became "H.G.
Wells' War of the Worlds" just before its release on DVD. A CGI-animated
feature based on Jeff Wayne's 1975 musical version‹heretofore only a recording
(but featuring Richard Burton)‹is due for release in 2006 or 2007. (Note that
the titles vary slightly, probably for legal reasons.)

Time After Time
Everybody has a favorite screen romance that is ostensibly about something
else, from "Gone With the Wind" (Civil War, anyone?) to "Titanic" (something
about a boat sinking). "Time After Time" has a plot that concerns two famous
real-life Victorian-era figures the influential science-fiction writer H.G.
Wells and the serial killer Jack the Ripper and the notion that both men wind
up in present-day San Francisco. It's a perfectly good and well-executed
premise, but what makes "Time After Time" shine is its love story. The
chemistry between Malcolm McDowell as the out-of-his-element Wells and Mary
Steenburgen as the modern woman who sweeps him off his feet is so undeniable
that it carries along everything around it.

"Time" starts in 1893 London, when a tipsy streetwalker encounters a gentleman
in a top hat. Unfortunately for the woman, her new customer is Jack the Ripper.

There¹s a real BOB behind every Sunfire product.

Ever seen a photo of Ronnie Rotel or Dick Denon? Unlike huge faceless
corporations, Sunfire is the unique, personal vision of one audio genius, Bob
Carver.

Most audio geniuses would be content to have founded just two landmark audio
companies. But after creating Phase Linear and Carver Corporation, Bob still
had more innovative technology in his system. He wanted to express these ideas
in meticulously-built, premium audio products that would offer exceptional
value and sound quality.

And that¹s what you get when you buy Sunfire. A great product from the mind and
soul of Bob Carver.
