Audio Video Education on RHT:

HDMI: One Cable to Replace Them All?
Staring at the back of a modern home theater receiver or AV preamp can be a
scary thing for inexperienced AV enthusiasts. The number of connections on a
higher-end piece can be overwhelming, with multiple video input and output
types ranging from composite to component to S-Video and DVI/HDMI. The audio
options can be just as daunting with toslink, AES-EBU, composite and digital
RCA audio connections all filling up a great deal of real estate on the
receiver or AV preamp. Assuming a user can figure out how to best configure the
system and put the right cables in the right connections on the back of the
gear, the process is only half over at this point.

Programming each input of the receiver/preamp is a whole task in itself and
requires some planning and foresight to be sure that each video and audio input
is properly assigned. Since all receivers and preamps differ in configuration,
getting the right audio input and video input lined up properly can sometimes
prove difficult.

When all the cables are plugged in and the programming has been completed, even
some of the most well thought out cabling set-ups often result in a large rat's
nest of cables cluttering the back of the equipment rack. Surely anyone who has
gone through the task of installing a system has said to himself or herself at
some point, "Can't they just make one cable that replaces all of these?"

Movie Review: Serenity

Reviewed by: Abbie Bernstein
Rating: Four Stars

As the creator of the passionately beloved series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer,"
"Angel" (with David Greenwalt) and "Firefly," Joss Whedon enjoys a following
second to few. The thing is, even if one knew nothing else about the filmmaker
who is making his feature directorial debut with his own script here,
"Serenity" would justify Whedon's reputation and popularity it's an immensely
satisfying and entertaining science-fiction yarn that also has elements of
comedy, horror, sober drama and political allegory. Remember when really
intelligent writers and directors used the genre not just to blow things up
(although "Serenity" doesn't shy away from that) but also to get people to
think? "Serenity" is a return to that rightfully honored tradition.

The beginning of "Serenity" gets us up to speed very quickly. It's 600 years in
the future, and overpopulation on Earth has led to humanity expanding into
another solar system, where the governing Alliance has won a war against a
rebellion by the less well-off and less civilized outer planets, which are
endangered by space-faring cannibals known as Reavers...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season 2
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is one of those series that divide the viewing
audience into several segments those who think it's one of the best episodic
TV shows on the air now (maybe ever), those who enjoy it occasionally, those
who've never tried it and those who just don't get it.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Complete Second Season" is recommended for
everyone who doesn't fall into that last category. While it would be wrong to
say that "Buffy" hit its stride in its second season the show pretty much hit
the ground running in its two-hour Season One premiere and seldom has stumbled
thereafter Season Two is widely viewed as one of "Buffy's" best seasons...

Angel - Season 5
Isn't this the way it always goes? A TV series gets better and better, finally
hits its stride so that practically every episode rocks, it show flashes of
genuine genius and it gets cancelled. In the case of "Angel," this is
particularly bewildering, as in its fifth season (2003-2004), the show was
enjoying its best ratings ever, was doing great for the WB in its Wednesday
night berth, had cut its budget (which makes its increased quality that much
more notable) and had a slew of killer episodes.

Ah, well, such are the mysteries of television. At least the episodes are now
available on DVD, a good thing as just about all of "Angel" Season Five is
worth repeat viewing, most of it improves and deepens with a second (or even
third) look.
