Linus and I discussed this this morning. It might make sense to change the screen layout at least on a phone: have each pane be full screen and switch between them with swipe gestures. That way we could have a readable dive list where you select a dive and then you can swipe to get the profile, another one to get the main tabs, another one to get the map.
