ran just fine, and installed most Qt modules, but while there is source
code in the qtwebkit subdirectory, and also a fresh Makefile is created

Did you go inside the qtwebkit dir and type make?
I tried that but make just said "nothing to be done for target 'first'"
and ended with that.
I don't see from WebKit.pro how it could result in a disabled build.
Searching for others with a similar problem I found a hint that if
libwebp includes are not available on the system, Qt would
silently exclude the building of qtwebkit.
I installed libwebp and started configure/make on a freshly unpacked
source tree... it will take about one more half hour for the
compilation to finish, for me to see if that helped... ;-)
