Pedro nailed it.  I had forgotten about the dialout group as that was done a 
long time back -- maybe Ubuntu 12.04.

Noted that the Building web page is not in sync with the INSTALL file.

Dirk:

The only things I normally need to do in order to run subsurface on my 
Kubuntu, that aren't on the INSTALL file are:

- add myself to dialout group

and (as Linus pointed out yesterday):

- sudo ldconfig full-path-to/install-root/lib
