Question on this track (perhaps OT)... do the "HTML5" specs have something in this regard? IIRC (from an in-depth reading done 3 months ago) the "offline" extensions have a simple facility (that looks a lot like what you're working on) as well as the full blown show of offline webapps that Gmail uses. If it's done in an HTML5 compatible way, love will spread and ponies will prance in the prairies...
