I've nowhere near the familiarity as (IMHO) yourself and others have to the problem space, so don't pretend to be able to opine on this, and have no use case for it. Please definitely consider my patch as a straw man to delay/engender discussion rather than an educated attempt to solve a current problem. I figure as others might have a use case, and you/others have the experience with what works and what doesn't, I'd provide a possibly useful shortcut to the minimum # of lines of code that could be changed to satisfy the use case to save others/you that small amount of time.
