Got a bit closer. Looks like gears is trying to display a dialog with some content that should be shipped in the chrome for the extension. Placing chrome.manifest in the hulahop/chrome dir registers the chrome provider for the extension, but then we would then need to copy somewhere all the html, css, images, etc that are distributed inside the .xpi. The .xpi that David provided to me is here: http://dev.laptop.org/~tomeu/gears-linux-opt-0.4.3.0.xpi Ideas about how to install this and other extesions in Browse?
