Saving the shape should happen when you hit the 'Enter' key. Also, hitting Enter should end the shape-editing mode (indicated by the fat green poly-line). I am unable to reproduce the problem you describe. What does happen when you press enter? Is there some output? Can you confirm connection-editing with the enter-key?
