thanks for the links! I am rather sure that I did not play with the 
repositories at all, but I will check again in a virtual machine.

While researching for the version issue I googled for "somo download" 
and the first relevant hit was this one:

http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/sumo/?title=Downloads

Does that page belong to "you" and is maintained? Because it says that 
the latest release is 0.17...
