Hello,
it very much depends on what you mean by "one of the next versions". It
also depends on what simulation behavior you expect exactly.
- There is the simTram project (
https://sites.google.com/site/simtramsimulator/) which extends sumo by
cutting lanes into thin stripes and thus gives more control over lateral
positions.
- There is an option for making lane-changing continuous
(--lanechange.duration) which interpolates positions between two lanes and
lets a vehicle temporarily block 2 lanes.

Either of these features would be a good basis for lane-independent
positioning via TraCI. However, since development is mostly driven by the
project needs of the core development team at DLR it don't think it will
happen in the next 12 Months.
