there are several improvements you can try:
1. make the net smaller by leaving out roads you don't need (for
instance pedestrian zones when importing from OpenStreetMap) or by
disabling internal lanes "--no-internal-links" on network creation. The
route will work in the simulation with the complete net as well.
2. Use a fast disk / SSD / RAM disk.
3. Try our largely undocumented binary network format by giving the
output network a name ending in ".sbx" and then loading the net as usual
in the router.
