Hello!
My name is Frederick Grönberg, I am currently a (part time) student in
ancient history and classical archaeology at Stockholm University, Sweden.
For the moment I am writing a final paper for my bachelors degree about
Greek an Roman sundials and their architectural context. The periods I am
interested in are from Classical Greece up to 500th century Rome.
My main reference for this is of course Sharon L. Gibbs 'Greek and Roman
Sundials' and her catalog.
Some of the questions I am trying to investigate are for example:
- Differences in the positioning of sundials between Greece and Rome.
- Differences between the type and positioning of sundials in villas,
gardens, temples and towns.
So far I haven't seen any treatment of this in any literature in the
classical field.
My questions for you dear sundialers are:
Have you any information, pointer or references about Greek or Roman
sundials I would be very grateful. The problem is that the sundials must be
_in_situ_ or very near the original positions.
Another problem for me is that it's very hard to get foreign bulletins or
journals about sundials through the university library or the national
library. Any suggestions?
Any other suggestions concerning the subject of ancient Greek or Roman
sundials are welcomed too!
Thanks in advance!
/Frederick :)
