The April '97 issue of the NAWCC Bulletin (Nat'l Assoc. of Watch and Clock Collectors) contains a book review of possible interest to dialists.
The book reviewed is entitled "Geometry in Motion: A Mathmatical Demonstration, Vol. 1" by H. Stephen Stewart. Apparently it has been published before in Horological journals, so please excuse me if it has already been seen on the list. I haven't seen it. It concerns Christ Church, located in Weems, Lancaster County, VA, built in 1732. Apparently this church was built to incorporate a complex solar calendar, and much astronomical information. The whole building is apparently a solar compendium. It indic ates, among other things, time and date, progression of the seasons, equinoxes, solstices, and cross-quarter days. The whole building was aligned to render an equation of time similar to that of the 75th Eastern Standard Meridian which is 78 miles east. The book, a series of monographs, detail much more than sun dial related aspects of the place, including numerological, geometric and pictographic features. Specs: 12 pgs. of preliminaries, 194 pages of text and diagrams, including 13 B\W photos. Hardback. Published by Stewart Horological Surveys, Weems, Williamsburg, VA USA in 1993. Price listed is $65.
