Have you thought of using "Sun-path Diagrams" for this task. Sun-path
diagrams are used by architects the world over to get a quick idea of the
suns altitude and azimuth and with the aid of an additional overlay you can
also calculate the shadow angle of a vertical or horizontal shading device.

In the USA the Equidistant projection is commonly used, the rest of the
known universe uses Stereographic projections. A good reference to follow up
is "The Environmental Science Handbook " by S.V.Szokolay published in 1980
