Dear all,
I have been corresponding with Roderick Wall re his request for books
on engraving in stone and concrete. As it happens, I couldn't really
help him other than to suggest
a) phone up the publisher and order the book(s) with a credit card. I
have done this for years, and never been ripped off.
b) search www.barnesandnoble.com or www.amazon.com who both claim to
be the biggest boock shops in the world.
Anyway, a couple of books on engraving in metal and colouring metal
that may be useful to makers of dials:
Hughes, R. & Rowe, M. (1991) The colouring, bronzing and patination
of metals. A manual for fine metalworkers, sculptors and designers.
Thames and Hudson, London. ISBN 0-500-01501-5
I forget the price, but it was pretty expensive. I bought my copy
from Rita Shenton, (Horological Bookseller) 148 Percy Rd,
Twickenham, England TW2 6JG (phone 081 894 6888, plus of course the
country code, etc.) Lots of colour plates of the results of differnt
chemical formulae. Essential if you want to "colour" your dials.
Meek, J.B. (1973) The art of engraving. A book of instructions. F
Brownell & Sons, Montezuma.
A FANTASTIC book!! Even if you never engrave anything, it is lovely
to read. Available from F Brownell & Sons, Route 2 Box 1, Montezuma,
Iowa, USA 50171. (Phone 515 623 5401) Price about $US34.
Brownells have a great catalogue (all of you people in USA, please
note the CORRECT spelling of "catalogue" ;-) ) with lots of lovely
tools. Yes, mainly for gunsmiths, but also including engraving tools,
and some really nicestuff called "Heat Stop" which is like a past
that you use when you want to silver solder something and not
overheat the rest of the job.
I hope that this is useful to you all.
Cheers from Sydney, where the sun is actually shining for the first
day in a long time!
